WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

I typed, “Everyone wants peace but it’s not something we can take off a shelf to eat or drink.” That reminded me of a poem fragment about grocery shopping and selecting detergent . . .

I love you.

An internet search did not reveal any clues. I found the pocketknife I had recently sharpened and began opening boxes (packed for a move to Maine) marked “poetry.” I thought the poem would be in one of my course books. After an hour of sitting on a wooden milking stool, I had piles of books and paper in front of my desk and no poem titled “Joy” at least not the poem I remembered. It wasn’t a poem about Tide or Ivory, and it was written before Dawn was available. I did eventually find Randall Jarrell’s poem titled “Next Day.” The first line is all that resonates “Moving from Cheer to Joy, from Joy to All”
