Aron Ralson, an American rock climber said, “The environment will outlast us with its unfathomable forces and unyielding powers.” Unfathomable forces and unyielding powers have taken control of my life more than once and they may do so again. Your environment may not be on a mountainside, or in a desert. It is where you are in your life. Though I may see forces coming, I cannot alter their course. I can only make the most of the time before they strike.
Knowing something is coming is not the same as experiencing. Knowing is a work of the mind, of logic, of preparation. Experiencing happens in the heart and it does not begin until that exact moment when everything changes. Knees get weak, the room spins, there’s a falling sensation. We have to recover, we cannot stay where we fall.
Sandra Ingerman said, “We want to remember we are part of continuing cycles and return to the flow of the river of life and discontinue walking against it.” There are times walking against the flow or paddling against it is necessary to reach safety, to avoid being swept into deeper, swirling waters.
There are times we must leave the water to regain our bearings, to dry off, to get warm, to be nourished. In times of great distress, we want to go home. Edward Abbey writes that “there’s no limit to the human capacity for the homing sentiment.” Further, Abbey says, “Every man, every woman carries in their heart and mind the image of the ideal place known or unknown, actual or visionary.”
Where is your home? I love you.
