NIGHT IS FALLING

I Love You

A friend asked about this still life

Why I used these objects

arranged this way . . .

dried flowers and grasses

in remembrance of wild bouquets

on summer days

Only one chalice,

because we always shared a cup

Books—because he told me to write

what I know . . .

and there is so much

I don’t know

The pitcher

where a candle should sit

unpredictable,

he never let me forget

Perhaps people sitting around the table

will toss grapes into the pitcher,

or replace it with a candle,

smooth the green cloth

and deal cards for a tarot reading

Like the cards,

there are elements

of past, present and future here

and more stories

than you have the time to hear
